American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (CAN) Legislative Advocacy

Event

Mark your calendars for the 2026 Virginia Cancer Action Day! The event will be held in Richmond, VA on Wednesday, February 4th from 7:30am - 1:00pm. Official invitation will come out in November.

 ***

Legislative Ambassadors advocate for cancer-related policies at the local, state, and federal levels. Research shows a connection between lack of access to health care and late-stage cancer diagnosis, underscoring the critical role health insurance coverage plays in survivorship. As high school students, we bring a unique perspective, driving meaningful change in cancer prevention, research, and treatment accessibility.

We are proud to be part of the driving force of advocating for policies that serve the best interests of cancer patients:

Protecting Care Through Medicaid

Engaging lawmaker to oppose the sweeping cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA Marketplace that would leave millions of people without access to affordable health coverage, benefits and services, including cancer care.

Extending the enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits

Enhanced premium tax credits are set to expire at end of 2025 and Congress is deliberating extension. Extending the enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent millions from experiencing major increases in enrollee premiums and losing health coverage.

Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (HR 842/S339)

Improve access to new and innovative cancer screenings for Medicare beneficiaries.

Investing in Cancer Research and Prevention

Support robust funding for cancer research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Advanced Research Project Agency for Health (ARPA-H), and cancer screening and prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

HB 1725 Medical Debt Protection Act

Urged lawmakers to vote YES on HB 1725 through calls, emails, meetings, letter to the editor. A bill has successfully passed both the House and the Senate and has been signed into law by the governor.
